  • Four Years

(I was going to make some sort of political joke with the title of this post, but couldn't quite make it work this early in the morning.)

As of today, my amazing husband and I have been married for FOUR YEARS. This seems extraordinary to me in so many ways, not the least of which is the fact that I have been lucky enough to find, catch, and keep a man who puts up with - even enjoys! - my weird quirks, habits, passions, and thought patterns, and that he is still my best friend.

I am not much of one for putting personal photographs on this site, as it is hypothetically my "anonymous" page, but I think I can get away with sharing the following. It is one of my favorites from June 25, 2004.

Happy Anniversary to the love of my life and the best friend any girl could ever have. <3

PS I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge that today is our first baby's birthday. Happy #3, d'Artagnan!

Could not resist a quick remote upload; hope this works.

    Hello?

    Testing... testing...

Well, here I am. I don't have anything to say. Actually, I have TONS to say - but no energy to say them. That's not even entirely true; it paints a picture of me worn out, reclined swoon-like on a chaise lounge. I'm buzzing with energy, it's just that none of it seems to be being routed toward blogging. If anyone would like to talk about how to teach extremely remedial grammar at the same time as fielding highly advanced grammar questions in the world's most differentiated classroom, that would probably spark my enthusiasm. And I'm trying to put together a unit using Smoke Signals (one of the extended "texts" for my grade), some of Alexie's short stories, and something else. Problem is, I've also just realized that I've been made to teach "The Most Dangerous Game," "The Scarlet Ibis," and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." I like all of those short stories just fine, but if you're familiar with them you'll likely recognize the same thing I did: not a single female character (except Mitty's nagging wife). So I'm looking for female voices, female characters...

Yesterday R and I rescued - captured? kidnapped? - two feral kittens. One bit me. It's a longish story that I ought to tell, but for now I need to go check in on them and try to figure out if they're drinking their water or not. I think they are 4-5 weeks old and weaned, but I'm not sure and it's worrying me. They're going to the Humane Society, except that it's too late today, I think. Then we need to catch their mom and get her spayed so this doesn't happen again...

Tomorrow is another day of school, but I'm halfway done. I heard a rumor about a possible job - a good one - and am hoping to get an interview this week. Who knows.

Hi everyone. Stay cool. I'll check back in at some point. :)

  • One Week

    In the last week I
    • got my first classroom (if only for four weeks)
    • set up said classroom
    • almost lost half my job/half my paycheck due to lack of enrollment (I'm being paid by the hour - $23/hr - to teach eight hours of ninth grade English; if my afternoon class hadn't filled the rest of the way up they would have canceled it)
    • QUICKLY learned all the ways in which summer school is different from regular school
    • got a crash course in all the things I took for granted in using another teacher's proven system and partial materials
    • taught a month's worth of ninth grade English curriculum
    • got my first job interview, at a highly-desirable school
    • did a kickass job at said interview
    • learned from an insider that I basically had the job
    • did not get the job (the last person they interviewed had more experience and they "had" to go with him)
    • lost my voice through sheer stint of speaking
    • made a name for myself, in some small circle, as being a really good teacher for kids with IEPs (it's a long story, and I oversimplify, but I'm tired)
    • became the unofficial IT person and floor manager, given that we have no IT person in the summer school, and that it's my "home school" so I know how things work and where they are
    • got two promises of advocacy in my job hunt from my summer school assistant principal and from the principal who didn't end up hiring me
    • found out that the only other significant school district in my area has completely screwed me over and so I may very well not get a job at all, all because they can't be bothered to process applications
    • uhm... lots of other things, too
    I am exhausted.

Romans 12:9-21

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

No, "if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
